One of the most exciting and intense storylines in the Dragon Ball universe occurs in Dragon Ball Super: The Tournament of Power. It brought together the most powerful fighters from different universes and they all fought in a massive battle royale against one another, to the death!. Not only did it feature tremendous new forms but also emotional self-sacrifices and memorable battles that defined what it meant to be a Dragon Ball fan for fans everywhere.

The omni-king zeno, who rule all realities, organized a tournament where childlike but immensely powerful beings were to be engaged in competition with one another in the universes where the losing universe would be wiped out of existence. Therefore, the entire worlds and civilizations of the losing universe would be wiped out based on the outcome of the tournament thus creating possibly the highest stakes ever.
The concept of the tournament was first proposed by Son Goku after his introduction to Zeno. While Goku had envisioned a friendly, martial arts competition, the outcome turned out to be much more dangerous than that once the Grand Priest announced that the losing universes would be wiped out. Each of the universes taking part in the tournament would be required to choose ten fighters that will represent their universe in battle.
Goku and his buddies from Universe seven (7) went out and built a pretty good fighting team. Goku was on the fighting team along with Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Android seventeen (17), Android eighteen (18), Master Roshi, Tien Shinhan and Krillin and even former bad guy Frieza!! Frieza being on the fighting team was shocking to most of the group since Frieza was one of the most evil guys ever to fight Goku. However; it was necessary for them to use Frieza’s powers to help save universe seven (7).

The tournament took place on a large floating stage called “the Void.” This Void existed outside of space and time. There were eight different universes represented at this competition, with each universe represented by ten contestants. There were no rounds or one-on-one matches as would be found in a traditional competition. Instead, the tournament had all fighters fighting against one another in a Battle Royale format which meant all fighters could attack and try to eliminate other fighters at any time. The tournament only had one rule: no killing was allowed. Participants needed to knock their opponent/competitors off of the stage to remove them from the competition.

The Tournament of Power from the start displayed nothing but action. Participants in the many universes had special fighting styles and forms. All the while Universe 11 was the most dangerous because it had the Pride Troopers and their top fighter, Jiren. Jiren was introduced having so much power that even the gods feared him. His calm personality with incredible power made him become one of the most memorable Dragon Ball characters.
Another prominent fighter was Toppo. He fought on behalf of justice, and later, he acquired the God of Destruction ability while still fighting in his full capacity. Universe 6 also featured in a very significant way; Caulifla, Kale and Cabba, the Saiyan fighters of Universe 6 too. Kale’s berserker mode was an exact copy of the super saiyan form of Broly, the great himself. And that made her, the greatest threat / the scariest / the baddest / the most dangerous competitor present in that tournament.
One great thing about the Tournament of Power will be how it allowed Side Characters to all have their “Moment to Shine”. Master Roshi is so much weaker than most of the other fighters but he proves how much wisdom and experience he possesses as a martial artist. You see a side of Android 17 that has not been seen before, with his Superior Intellect, Excellent Teamwork, and Stamina that Surprised All Fans. You also see Gohan step up into the Role of Leader and you see Gohan exhibiting a level of maturity and strategic decision making never seen before.
But the coolest thing about this arc was when Goku reached the point where he was able to achieve Ultra Instinct. Goku was pushed to his limits when he was fighting Jiren after surviving a Spirit Bomb, he was really desperate and that’s when he accessed this strange state called ultra instinct.

Through Ultra Instinct, Goku’s body was free of conscious control, which gave him lightning-quick reactions and movement along with great strength. All of a sudden, his moves became almost holy in their flawless timing and the way they flowed together. Because of the music, visuals, and mood in those scenes; some of the most iconic moments in history of anime.
Even though Jiren was pretty much unbeatable, there still wasn’t anyone that could take on Jiren’s full power and not be defeated. However, Jiren does not fight like most villains do – he doesn’t do it out of some sort of evil desire; he fights because he believes that having the absolute maximum amount of strength will help show that he can overcome the pain he has gone through in his past life. so he represents a much more complex and interesting rival for Goku.
As the tournament progressed, the gods and fighters reacted emotionally to the outcome to the point where fighters experienced the horrifying repercussion of losing. There was seriousness in this situation, but the tournament had some humorous moments and the opportunity for fighters to work together on their personalities and teamwork.
The final battle of (Dragon Ball )was one of the greatest ever fought. Goku had to join forces with Frieza and Android 17. All three of them had completely exhausted themselves fighting Jiren, and Goku and Frieza had previously been two of the biggest enemies to ever fought. Their teamwork was a true testament that fighting for survival can unite even the fiercest rivals.

Goku and Frieza did two distinct things first, they both fought to their extreme limits before they both sacrificed themselves (it had been previously established in the tournament that if you get pushed off the fighting platform (are out of bounds), then you are out of the tournament), Jiren was pushed off the fighting platform by” Goku” and “Frieza”. Android 17 was standing as the last surviving member of Universe 7. With this victory, Universe 7 was awarded the Super Dragon Balls, which can grant any wish.
Android 17 did not wish to serve himself when making his wish but instead wished that all deleted universes be restored. This selfless gesture brought credibility to Universe 7’s claim to Life as the Omni Kings were impressed with his actions and showed that the gods were secretly hoping that the winning universe would make such a compassionate decision.
The Tournament of Power arc success is due to the perfect combination of extreme action sequences, emotional storytelling, and overall character development within its entirety. The series introduced many new and strong characters to the Dragon Ball multiverse and gave Dragon Ball fans some of the best animation and battles ever seen throughout the series. Episodes that featured the transformation of Ultra Instinct basically became a worldwide sensation in the anime community.

The biggest lesson that spectators learned from this tournament was that real strength comes from more than just power levels. It requires courage, sharing, determination, and working together as a team. Android 17, Master Roshi, and Gohan illustrated how much intelligence, and heart, can count, versus just sheer muscle!
The Tournament of Power is still one of the most popular arcs in the history of Dragon Ball, even many years after it premiered. It pushed every fighter to his limits and brought alot of exciting moments that are still generating excitement and discussion among the anime community.
