Muzan Kibutsuji: The Demon King Afraid of Death. Part 1

0

The Scariest Demon Slayer Villain and One of the Most Human. To start off we’re going to get some things out of the way. Muzan Kibutsuji is not some ancient, evil, dark god figure or being. He didn’t become a demon because he was ambitious or had some kind of ideology. His only reason was that he didn’t want to die. Just like that! That’s how the most powerful demon ever had its origin – the very demon that spawned all nightmares in Demon Slayer, who completely wiped out Tanjiro’s family – a sick, scared, desperate man in search of a treatment, and while in all his desperation, he (inadvertently) evolved into an entity the world had never seen before. It sounds pretty minimal when you say it like that. Those single event had impact of huge amount of blood and loss over a period of 1,000 years, where blame can be attributed to Muzan. Demon Slayer takes on a heavier meaning once you know about Muzan; his past and how he changed over time, what he was always after as a human.

Before Muzan became a demon he was a dying man living in the Heian period. Over 1000 years ago, Muzan Kibutsuji was born as a human being in the Heian Period of Japan; as a child, he was diagnosed with, an incurable disease, and it is said that the doctors did not believe that he would live to be an adult, due to his body deteriorating before he ever got the opportunity to live.
A medical practitioner developed an experimental treatment for one of his patients, using a drug derived from the Blue Spider Lily, a very rare flower with extreme medicinal properties. This treatment worked; kinda. The death process of Muzan had stopped, he was almost difficult to destroy at all. He also became more powerful than any human could dream of, as his strength and speed reached a limit, that would make him basically un-killable.
He was something new, something different now, He was transformed into something new that couldn’t live in daylight anymore; instead, it requires meat (humans) and blood to keep itself going. The cure turned him into the very first demon in existence and as such, he belongs to a unique class.

The Bitter Irony: Muzan kills his doctor before he’s done done healing him! He freaks out, sees himself turning ’cause the doctor couldn’t finish healing him yet and goes ahead and kills him! If only he’d had a little patience, the doctor would’ve probably finished making the medicine, and then Muzan wouldn’t have to deal with the sun anymore! But no! Now he’s spent a thousand odd years and a crapload of energy searching and killing and stuff all because he couldn’t just sit down for a couple of minutes.)

What Defines Him as a Villain at This Point?
Muzan stands apart from likely few antagonists in that he succeeds in being both scary to watch and interesting to see the way that his character is depicted in the series. It is a main reason for why he is scary at all.
Muzan is just quiet, never runs his mouth like that about his idea of the world and whatnot. He does not think humans are below him at all. Cold? You could say that too. He is calm, cool, collected and confident in all that he does. He is arrogant but not in that attention grabbing, flamboyant kind of way. It’s the confidence you feel when you have been the strongest being on Earth for over a thousand years and have never faced anything close to a real threat.
Both humans and demons are nothing but mere tools to Muzan. His strongest elite demons, namely, the Twelve Kizuki (“the Twelve Demon Moons”) are at his disposal; thus, he has the power to hear all their thoughts, experience what they experience and instantly destroy them, should anyone of the two displease him. The lower demons have also been destroyed simply because they had uttered Muzan’s name. This kind of control that Muzan has over the Twelve Demon Moon is not for the sake of power. It demonstrates that Muzan has trust issues, because for him the word trust stands for weakness and that for him, weakness means death.

Despite how calm he may seem on the outside, there is a consistent flow of fear that exists deep inside him. Muzan Kibutsuji is fundamentally afraid. He’s not afraid of pain or fighting. He’s afraid of death. Everything he’s ever done, every demon he’s ever made, and all the plans he’s ever formulated over the span of a thousand years, can all be traced back to the same thing; he’s obsessed with survival, whatever it takes, and for all time! The dread of dying that made him into a demon never really went away; he simply learned to flee it more efficiently.

The Blue Spider Lily: A Thousand-Year-Quest :

Two big weaknesses were noticed by Muzan immediately after his transformation, namely sunlight, and the Wisteria poison. Of the two, finding a solution to the sunlight problem kept him on constant search.
And how is it that his medicine works? Well, for one, his first solution is to find another Blue Spider Lily and finish the work of the doctor that found it the first time. By acquiring the Blue Spider Lily, he can duplicate the medicine himself, which will include either upgrading the existing medicine or creating a new one, and so by doing that, he can lose his weakness to sunlight and become the most perfect being, immortal.

He makes demons; many centuries went by, and many thousands existed. They were deployed all of Japan and other locations too. He was not creating an empire of demons but rather each new demon created meant an increased level of search for the Blue Spider Lily. Each time he made a demon he had another way to search for the flower that he could not search for himself because he had to hide to stay safe in the daylight.
The most brutal element of the plan was that the azurite rose would be available for just a couple of days annually, and during the daylight hours. Muzan could not have ventured outside during the daytime, and thus he had spent over a millennium in pursuit of a flower he could never directly search for himself. Therefore, Muzan was not following any evil plan but instead was trapped within his own prison.

So viewers, we will talk about the rest of the information about Muzan Kibutsuji on my next post. Till then stay tuned with
